O ften, Christians consciously or subconsciously think we play a part in the matter of our salvation. Among Christian friends, we may scrutinize one another’s actions and compare how close we are with God. For the self-reflective, we may have examined ourselves and seen that all our thoughts, words and deeds are tainted by sin one way or another. These comparisons and self- reflections may cause us to feel discouraged. Some of us who are struggling in our spiritual walk, may even begin to doubt whether we are truly saved. Today’s verse seeks to answer those doubts. Simply put, scripture clearly states that our salvation comes from belief in God and His promises. Abraham believed God, and it was his belief in the almighty, covenant-keeping and immutable God that was counted to him for righteousness. In spite of the times when Abraham failed God by not trusting in His protection, such as lying about Sarah as his sister, Scripture here says that it was his belief in God that was key to his salvation. Oftentimes we may be discouraged by the sin we see in ourselves. We may have Christian friends who share that they feel especially sinful and wonder if they are saved. The antidote to this doubt and discouragement is faith in God’s Word, the Bible. While we may (and should) hunger and thirst after righteousness, let us remember our salvation is sure only because the promises of God are sure.

LESSON

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail. When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God I shall prevail, standing on the promises of God. – R. Kelso Carter
