W hat did Abraham believe about God that was counted to him for his righteousness? We may wonder what exactly we should be believing in. Abrahamwas a prominentOldTestament figure. He did not have the complete revelation of the Word of God. In order to be saved, was what Abraham believed different from what believers today have to believe in? No, God’s message of salvation has been consistent even in the Old Testament. In Genesis 12-17, God promised Abraham many things. Most importantly, we see God promised Abraham that He would be a God to Abraham and his seed forever, and they would dwell in Canaan, the promised land as their everlasting possession [Genesis 17:7-8]. Abraham’s belief that God would keep this promise is in essence the same belief that Christians are to have today. Like Abraham, Christians today are to believe that God will be their God and that they will dwell in heaven, the promised land, together with Him. For those of us who are struggling to have faith in Scripture, let us be thankful we have an additional advantage over Old Testament believers – Christians today have the complete Word of God revealed [Hebrews 11:13]. The Old Testament believers relied on their faith that God would fulfil His promise of eternal life even when God’s salvation plan was not fully revealed to them. We, on the other hand, have the Gospels and the New Testament Canon telling us exactly how His salvation plan has been enacted and completed.

LESSON

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Do I appreciate the Word of God so freely and comprehensively given to me?
