M an is made in the image of God. We have a soul and can thus worship God in Spirit; we have a mind and can praise God in Truth. We are moral beings and can differentiate right from wrong; we are social beings and thus can commune with God and have fellowship with one another. But all these are tainted when sin came into this world. Indeed, it is of God’s common grace we can still reason and think, and interact with one another. But without God’s gracious regeneration and revelation, we are limited and can only do according to our own wisdom and understanding. It is therefore absolutely true when Paul says, “There is none that understandeth.” Man in his presumptuousness may assume he has great knowledge. But it is one thing to know and another thing to understand. In fact, the more he knows, the less he realizes he knows (Socrates). The truth is, the heart of man, in his constant quest for wisdom, is restless, until it rests in God (Augustine). And when the answer to true wisdom comes, unregenerate man cannot accept it, because of the hardness of his heart. “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” [1 Corinthians 1:22-25]

LESSON

There is none that understandeth.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Me. – Acts 26:18
