M an’s volition is often controlled by his feelings and reasoning. Caught in the abyss of sin, he is unable to free himself from its bondage. He indulges in his own lusts and is inflated by his own ego, driving his stakes deep into this world, only to understand the vanity of life when he eventually faces his own mortality. His power to reason is also made captive by his own desires, and he cannot imagine life without the things he is pursuing in this world. He may be able to deceive himself, even the world, with a false impression of happiness and freedom, but the truth is that tragedy awaits him who is trapped in his own web of false hope. “There is none that seeketh after God.” If not for the grace of God working in the foolish heart of the sinner, man is working himself towards condemnation. But all praise to Him who sees us swimming in the miry pool of sin and lifts us up, cleanses us, so that we can see beyond our pathetic state. From then on, things are not the same anymore. We understand true joy and hope, and yearn to live each day fruitfully with the glory of everlasting life ahead of us. We find motivation to change for the sake of God’s kingdom. Indeed, there will be times of weaknesses when our feelings pull us towards the world; there will also be times when our reasoning is impaired by difficult circumstances we are facing in life. But in times like these, we call upon God and continue seeking after Him, and He will hold us up to live from strength to strength, and from grace to grace.

LESSON

There is none that seeketh after God.

And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart. – Jeremiah 29:13
