T his verse is quoted from Psalm 14, where the Bible gives us a definition of what it means to be a fool. By the world’s definition, a fool is a person who behaves unwisely. When one is said to “make a fool of oneself ”, he is deemed as a clown who does things that hurt his own reputation and interest. But a fool in God’s eyes is one who denies Him: “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good” [Psalm 14:1]. We are told God looked down from heaven upon the children of men and saying, “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one” [Psalm 14:3]. It is not difficult to find ‘good people’ in this world. In fact, the sad reality is that some non- Christians around us might even be better than some Christians according to man’s standards. However, from God’s vantage point, none of our good deeds is enough to make us righteous before the all-present and all-seeing God. We are totally depraved in that we are born with sin that affects all our faculties, making us unable to seek and to obey God. A sinner is led by his senses and the ways of this world. The Bible tells us the conscience of a sinner is seared with a hot iron [1 Timothy 4:2], dead in trespasses and sins [Ephesians 2:1]. If not for God’s light in our Lord Jesus Christ that cuts through the callousness of our heart, we would be totally lost. There is no way we can save ourselves.

LESSON

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved). – Ephesians 2:4-5
