H ave you ever been told something that turns out to be untrue? Or have you said something that is untrue to deceive someone? Lying has been a common sin amongst us ever since the serpent lied to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The devil lied to Eve to deceive her into eating the forbidden fruit by painting a false picture of the benefits of eating the fruit. At the same time, he also lied about God’s intentions, planting seeds of distrust in Adam and Eve. Such is the nature of lies, deceiving the hearer into believing the speaker, and changing the way one thinks about someone or something. In this day and age, when information is easily disseminated through the digital media, it is all the more important to be aware of what is true and what is not. Fake news is abundant on the Internet and unsuspecting readers can be easily deceived into thinking what they are reading is true. Fake news even come knocking at our doors via chatgroups and mobile apps, so readers beware and do not be part of the web of lies by forwarding unconfirmed news when you receive them. While deceit is becoming more widespread today, we can take comfort in the knowledge that God is in control and He is the source of all truth. Let us be wise, pray for discernment, and may God guide us and prompt us when confronted with deceiving words.

LESSON

Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit;

the poison of asps is under their lips.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour. – Ephesians 4:25a
