U nbelief is the rejection of the Oracles of God inscripturated in the Holy Scriptures. It is a sin [John 16:8-9]. The unbelievers’ eyes are blinded, and their hearts hardened by the evil one. “Therefore, they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them” [John 12:39- 40]. The unbeliever rejects God’s Word [Psalm 106:24] and despises His works [Psalm 78:32], and the miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ. “But though He had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on Him” [John 12:37]. He makes God a liar. “He that believeth not God hath made Him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son.” [1 John 5:10b]. His heart is evil, corrupt, proud and ungrateful, having rejected the love, mercy and grace of God. The unbeliever is condemned [John 3:18] and the wrath of God will be upon him. God put to death those who despised Moses [Hebrews 10:28]. Unbelief, in essence, despises the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. God warns – “Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?” [Hebrews 10:29]. The three indictments highlighted in this verse describe the horror and enormity of the sin of unbelief – which God Himself will avenge [Hebrews 10:30].

LESSON

For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. – Hebrews 10:31
