A s Christians, we usually think that we need to repent of and change our old ways after we commit sin. In the attempt to do so, we apply a set of rules and boundaries to abide by in order to change. We approach other believers to help keep us accountable to our rules and we pray often for strength from God to keep us from breaking these rules. We may do this because it seems easier for us to follow a set of ‘rules’ adopted from biblical principles than to have a heart fully surrendered and devoted to God. We may also do this because we do not fully understand the message of the Gospel. The focus today is on our sins being covered. This means that when the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross, all sin (past, present and future) is covered by His blood. As a result of His covering and we accepting this as ours, we become new beings in Christ, indwelt by the Holy Spirit and filled with new delights and desires. With God’s Spirit working and active in us comes the yearning to change our sinful behaviours and emotions into those pleasing to Him. Change begins when we realise that the Lord Jesus Christ has covered our sins. When we sin, we have to acknowledge that we are incapable of changing our old sin nature by ourselves. Only God can change us, and God has changed us by covering us with His Son’s righteousness, so we may be righteous, and live righteously and victoriously through Him.

LESSON

Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

What have I done to change my sinful lifestyle? Was I relying on my own strength to change?
