A braham was living with his father’s family in the Ur of the Chaldees when God called him to leave and go to the Promised Land. God’s Word does not tell us why God chose Abraham since he had a background of idolatry, but he responded in obedience. Abraham did not know his final destination but trusted God and built altars to worship God as he journeyed southwards. God promised Abraham on several occasions that he will be the father of many nations, have many offspring and they will possess the land of Canaan [Genesis 12:2; 15:5; 17:6]. Although he and his wife were childless and of advanced age, Abraham had faith in God and believed His promises. Finally, Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah at the age of 100 and 90 years respectively, just as God promised. Ultimately, Abraham proved his unshakeable faith when tested by God [Genesis 22]. He was willing to offer Isaac as a burnt offering even though Isaac was his only son and the only means by which God’s promises would be fulfilled. God saw Abraham’s faith and provided a ram to be the substitute sacrifice. Abraham was not an example of perfect obedience, but he did return to God in faith so that he was called a friend of God [Isaiah 41:8] and a hero of faith [Hebrews 11:17-19]. May we learn to have the same faith in our Almighty God and trust Him to lead us every step of our lives.

LESSON

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found.

THOUGHT

Abraham obeyed God’s call “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God” [Hebrews 11:10].
