T he essence of all Jewish faith is declared in Deuteronomy 6:4 – “The LORD our God is one LORD”. We are given here to believe that our LORD God is the one living and true GOD. “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me” [Isaiah 45:5a]. The Jews maintained the highest conceptions of the one GOD and had contended for Him. Furthermore, the Lord Jesus Christ confirms that He is the LORD by His ‘I AM’ statements: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am” [John 8:58, also see John 6:35; 8:12; 10:9, 11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1]. Clearly, God is One. According to the Bible, there is only one God the LORD, but with three distinct Persons in the Godhead (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) who are equal in Being, Power and Glory with the same Divine nature, essence and attributes. This is evident in, for example, the benediction Paul has given: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God (the Father), and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen” [2 Corinthians 13:14]. The one God of grace justifies the circumcision by faith and the uncircumcision through faith. The word ‘circumcision’ here is a reference to the nation of Israel, and ‘uncircumcision’ refers to the Gentile nations. The Jew was already in a position for justification through the Law leading up to Christ. He had only to accept it as of faith, not of works of the Law [v. 20]. The Gentile must attain it through faith – faith in the Gospel now revealed to him.

LESSON

Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

THOUGHT

Trusting in the LORD is trusting in the perfect love of God the Father, the completed work of God the Son, and the leading of God the Holy Spirit.
