T he apostle Paul refuted the Jews who rejected the truth that salvation was by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul explained that this truth is based on God’s holiness. God is holy so there is no other way for sinners to approach Him except through the Lord Jesus Christ. But the unbelieving Jews argued that if salvation was by grace then it opened the way for sinners to sin freely and act lawlessly without restrain. Here Paul reminded them that to understand the grace of God they must realize that God is the holy Judge. Sinners will be judged for their sins. No one can avoid God’s judgment for any sin of commission and omission. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” [Romans 6:23]. Salvation is a gift. No good work is good enough to deserve God’s gift of His Son Jesus Christ who came into the world to save sinners. The Lord Jesus gave Himself to be the propitiation for our sins by His blood and death on Calvary’s cross. How then can anyone be saved? By laying hold on what our Lord Jesus has done for him by faith. Faith is turning to the Lord with a repentant heart and trusting Him as your only Lord and Saviour. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” [Ephesians 2:8-9]. “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” [Romans 5:1]. Having God’s peace, we labour on in works of faith and love.

LESSON

For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

THOUGHT

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10
